The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday (27 March) arrested five individuals along with more than eight bhori of stolen gold ornaments from their possession in a drive in the capital’s Azimpur.
The arrestees were identified as Mosammat Rozina Akter, 42, Meem Akter, 23, Md Al-Amin, 23, Md Kashem Ahmed, 28, and Md Nahid, 33.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Arifa Akhter Preeti confirmed the matter.
According to her, the theft took place on 23 March at a residence in the Azimpur Government Officers’ Quarters area in the capital.
Rozina Akter entered the house posing as a domestic worker around 10:50am. After working for a short time, she left the flat saying she would go to another apartment in the same building. When she did not return, the homeowners became suspicious and checked their valuables.
They later found a suitcase open and a box containing gold ornaments missing. The stolen items included two chains, a bangle, three rings, two bracelets, two pairs of earrings and a locket, weighing over nine bhori, with an estimated value of about Tk25 lakh.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Lalbagh Police Station. Based on CCTV footage and intelligence, police conducted drives in Hazaribagh, Khilkhet and Tongi East areas on Friday and arrested the suspects.
During the operation, police recovered over eight bhori of stolen gold ornaments from the arrestees.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the arrestees are members of an organised theft gang. Legal action against them is underway,” the officer added.
