There are 468,220 vacant posts across different ministries and government offices in Bangladesh, State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari has said.
Speaking during the question-and-answer session in parliament yesterday (1 April), he said, “The information was based on updated data published in the Statistics of Public Servants 2024 as of 31 December 2023. According to the report, the total number of government officials and employees currently in service stands at 1,450,891.”
He informed that 1,90,773 officials are working in the first class, while 68,884 posts remain vacant in this category. “In the second class, 2,33,726 employees are currently working against 1,29,166 vacant posts.
“In the third class, 6,13,835 employees are in service, but there are still 1,46,799 vacant posts. In the fourth class, 4,04,577 employees are working, while 1,15,235 positions remain unfilled,” the state minister added.
Bari also said that 7,980 employees are working in other categories, where 8,136 posts are still vacant. “Honorary, fixed-pay and contractual employees are also working in different categories, but they do not follow the government pay scale.”
Later, lawmaker Mohammad Rezaul Islam asked about the timeline for filling the vacant posts.
In response, the state minister said recruitment is an ongoing process, but the government has taken a 180-day programme under which each ministry and division is preparing recruitment plans based on their needs, and the process is underway.
