State Minister for Planning Zonayed Saki today (16 March) said that thousands of canals across the country will be excavated, with 400 canals in Brahmanbaria identified for restoration.
He said this at the inauguration of the Boalia Canal re-excavation project in Bijoynagar upazila.
“We aim to revive these canals. The government’s approach is to integrate economic growth through production and investment with the preservation of life and nature, and this initiative reflects that vision,” he told reporters.
The canal is six kilometres long and joins the Titas River at both ends. Previously, four kilometres of the canal had been excavated.
Re-excavation began today on the remaining two kilometres and an additional 1.8km branch canal, with a project cost of about Tk31 lakh. The work is being implemented by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).
Zonayed Saki said, “Rivers, canals and wetlands are extremely important for our survival. They are also essential for increasing production and investment, and for creating employment. Those who are occupying or polluting rivers and canals must be removed and these waterways must be freed. They need to be revitalised so that our lives become vibrant and the economy flourishes as well.”
