Authorities at Shah Amanat International Airport seized 300 cartons of foreign cigarettes from a passenger arriving from Muscat this morning (23 March).
Acting on a tip-off, airport customs, Customs Intelligence and the National Security Intelligence (NSI) carried out a joint drive in the airport’s customs hall.
They recovered the cigarettes at about 8:50am from the baggage of Atikur Rahman, a resident of Banshkhali in Chattogram, travelling on SalamAir flight OV-401 from Muscat.
The passenger was released after being verbally warned by customs authorities.
Officials said a total of 300 cartons of cigarettes had been seized, with an estimated revenue implication of Tk6 lakh.
The seized goods were confiscated at departmental memorandum value and will remain in the custody of Chattogram Customs House.
Airport authorities said surveillance would remain intensified to prevent the entry of prohibited goods and curb revenue evasion, with coordinated efforts from customs, intelligence agencies and other stakeholders continuing at the airport.
