At least three people were killed and more than 300 injured in violence that erupted across Bangladesh following the announcement of the 13th National Parliamentary Election results, according to a report released by Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).
The rights organisation said supporters of the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and independent candidates were involved in at least 200 clashes across 30 districts. The incidents left over 300 people injured.
HRSS presented its findings at a press conference at the National Press Club today (15 February). The fatalities were reported from Munshiganj, Bagerhat and Haluaghat in Mymensingh.
According to the report, the violence also resulted in widespread vandalism, looting and arson attacks on at least 350 homes, offices and business establishments.
In a particularly alarming allegation, HRSS said a 32-year-old mother of three was reportedly raped and physically assaulted in Charandandi union of Hatiya upazila in Noakhali, allegedly over voting for a candidate with the “Shapla Koli” electoral symbol.
The organisation described the incident as “outrageous and deeply concerning.”
Beyond the immediate post-election unrest, HRSS noted that from October last year to 14 February this year, more than 700 election-related violent incidents occurred nationwide. These incidents left at least 2,503 people injured and 10 killed.
During the same period, more than 500 houses, vehicles, businesses and campaign offices were damaged or set on fire.
The organisation also expressed concern over rising violence against women in connection with the election. It reported that at least 45 women faced harassment and 23 were injured in 32 campaign-related incidents between the announcement of the election schedule and 14 February.
HRSS called for prompt investigations into the incidents and urged authorities to ensure accountability and protection for victims.
