Three children have died with symptoms of measles in Rajshahi, amid a rise in infections among children in the district.
Two of the deaths occurred at a private CDM Hospital last night (1 April), and this afternoon (2 April), while another child died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), officials said.
In the past 24 hours, 20 more children have been admitted to hospitals with similar symptoms. As of this afternoon (2 April), a total of 132 children were undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the area.
Four children were discharged after recovery today, bringing the total number of children treated for measles at the hospital to 340 so far.
Shankar K Biswas, in charge of the emergency department and spokesperson of RMCH, said that six additional beds have been added to the paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) to increase capacity.
“The total number of paediatric ICU beds now stands at 18, with 12 currently dedicated to measles patients,” he said.
He further added that to reduce the pressure on RMCH, 10 ICU beds at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute are also being utilised for the patients.
