At least 204 people have been killed and more than 600 injured in 264 road accidents during the eight-day Eid-ul-Fitr travel period, according to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).
The organisation compiled the data from 17 March to 24 March noon, it said.
RSF Executive Director Saidur Rahman told The Business Standard that the figures are not final, as Eid travel is still ongoing and the situation may change until 28 March.
“New accidents are occurring every day, so the number of casualties may rise further,” he said.
He noted that the trend of accidents this Eid season is higher compared to last year, with a notable increase in train-related incidents.
“A lack of effective monitoring by law enforcement agencies and poor discipline on the roads are among the key reasons behind the rise in accidents. Without proper supervision and strict enforcement of laws, the situation is unlikely to improve,” he added.
Saidur also said that the number of accidents could have been even higher if motorcycle use had not declined amid fuel shortages.
According to RSF data from last year’s Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, 249 people were killed and 553 injured in 257 accidents over an 11-day period. The fatalities included 41 women and 59 children.
