The High Court has issued a rule asking why Limon Hossain, who lost his leg after being shot by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jhalokathi in 2011, should not be awarded Tk2.6 crore in compensation.
The court has also sought an explanation as to why directives should not be issued to identify the RAB officials accused in the incident.
The rule was issued today (1 February) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar.
Barrister Sara Hossain, along with lawyers Kazi Zahed Iqbal, Abdullah Al Noman, and Barrister Priya Ahsan Chowdhury, represented the petitioner during the hearing.
Earlier, Limon filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking compensation for losing his leg after being shot by RAB members.
According to the petition, Limon was shot on the afternoon of 23 March 2011 during a RAB operation in Jamaddarhat in Rajapur upazila of Jhalokathi.
He alleged that RAB members detained him and shot him in the leg. A few days later, doctors at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), were compelled to amputate his left leg.
The incident occurred just 12 days before his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination. At the time, Limon was 16 and was unable to sit for the exam that year.
Despite the setback, Limon did not give up. While undergoing treatment, he continued his studies and sat for the HSC examination the following year securing a GPA of 4.00.
He later enrolled at Gono Bishwabidyalay in Savar and is currently working as a lecturer at a university.
