Around 200 bhori of gold ornaments have allegedly gone missing from a locker of a customer at a branch of Pubali Bank in Bagerhat.
The complaint surfaced today (5 March) at the bank’s branch on Khan Jahan Ali Road in the town.
Confirming the matter, Additional Superintendent of Police of Bagerhat Sadar Circle, Shamim Hossain, said police visited the bank following the complaint.
“We have inspected the bank’s locker facility. An investigation has been launched to find out how such a large amount of gold could go missing from the secure locker. Legal action will be taken against those found responsible,” he added.
Following the report, Police Superintendent Md Hasan Chowdhury visited the bank to inspect the situation and said, “Police have launched an investigation to determine how such a large quantity of gold could disappear from the bank’s secure locker.”
The customer who filed the complaint, Suman Kumar Das, is a resident of the Dashani area of Bagerhat town and has long been involved in the betel-nut business.
Speaking about the incident, he said, “I had a locker at the bank where I kept around 200 bhori of gold ornaments belonging to my mother, aunt, brother, wife and several relatives on October 15 last year.”
He also added, “When I came to the bank yesterday to open the locker ahead of a family event at his house, I found that the locker was empty.”
“I immediately informed the police, and they are now investigating the matter,” he said.
Assistant General Manager of the bank branch, Md Monirul Amin, told journalists that a customer had complained that some valuables kept in a locker were missing.
“We have informed the police about the matter. They have visited the bank and started an investigation. The actual details will be known after the investigation,” he said.
