Two people were killed and four others injured after a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus on the Dhaka–Barishal highway in Gournadi upazila this morning (6 March).
The accident occurred around 9:30am in the Kasba area of Gournadi.
Officer-in-Charge of Gournadi Highway Police Station, Md Shamim Sheikh, confirmed the incident and said both the bus and the microbus had been seized. Traffic movement on the highway has since returned to normal, and legal action is being processed.
The deceased were identified as Md Ilias Hossain, 55, son of Abdul Wahid from Elephant Road in Dhaka’s New Market area, and Md Ripon Majhi, 45, the driver of the microbus from Chandpasha union of Babuganj upazila in Barishal.
Among the passengers of the microbus, four people were seriously injured. They are Moniruzzaman Moni, 38, from Shibchar upazila of Madaripur; Nuruzzaman, 46, from Muradpur in Dhaka; Abdul Wazed, 30, from Mongla in Bagerhat; and Md Shafiul Bashar, 40, from Daudkandi upazila in Cumilla.
Md Mizanur Rahman, station officer of Gournadi Fire Service and Civil Defence, said a Khulna-bound passenger bus of Tekerhat Express collided head-on with a Barishal-bound microbus.
“The microbus was badly mangled in the crash, leaving six people, including the driver, critically injured,” he said.
Fire service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving the report and rescued the injured, sending them to hospital. Two of the victims, including the microbus driver, later died while undergoing treatment.
The seriously injured were transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment.
