A father and daughter riding a motorcycle were killed after being hit by a speeding truck in the Science Lab area of the capital. Police have detained the truck driver responsible for the crash and seized the vehicle.
The incident occurred around 11 pm on Friday night (March 6).
The victims were identified as Saju Ahmed Sumon (45) and his daughter Sumaiya Ahmed Trisha (20). Saju Ahmed’s father’s name is Ashraf Uddin. They were living at 794 South Shahjahanpur.
Witnesses said a speeding truck hit the motorcycle, causing the riders to fall underneath the truck. “We ran to the scene and saw that the motorcyclist had died on the spot. We immediately took the seriously injured girl to the hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead,” they said.
Sub-Inspector Mahmudul of New Market Police Station confirmed the deaths of the father and daughter. He said Saju Ahmed Sumon and his daughter Sumaiya Ahmed Trisha were travelling through the Science Lab area on a motorcycle when a truck coming from behind hit them. Saju Ahmed Sumon died at the scene, while his daughter Sumaiya Ahmed Trisha was critically injured and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
He added that Saju Ahmed Sumon worked at the Segunbagicha Public Works Department, and Sumaiya Ahmed Trisha was a student. Police have detained the truck driver and seized the vehicle involved in the incident.
