In a move to curb traffic congestion in the capital, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a rigorous enforcement drive as part of its zero-tolerance policy against the illegal occupation of roads and footpaths.
On Thursday, two mobile courts led by DSCC executive magistrates carried out separate operations in the Sayedabad bus terminal area and the GPO Link Road in Gulistan.
The Sayedabad operation, which marked the second day of enforcement in the area, resulted in the sealing of nearly 100 illegal bus counters and the demolition of long-standing structures obstructing the footpaths. DSCC officials noted that the action follows a March 10 coordination meeting at Nagar Bhaban with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and transport representatives. That meeting mandated the removal of all counters outside the terminal and the reorganization of counters within the premises.
Simultaneously, another drive targeted the GPO Link Road near the south side of Baitul Mukarram Market in Gulistan. Authorities cleared illegal structures and temporary shops, successfully reopening the footpaths for pedestrians after years of encroachment.
In tandem with these physical operations, the DSCC issued an urgent public notice prohibiting the placement of goods on footpaths in front of markets and shopping malls. Shop owners have been instructed to clear these areas immediately; failure to comply may result in the cancellation of trade licenses and other legal penalties.
The DSCC confirmed that these eviction and monitoring efforts will continue on a regular basis to ensure city thoroughfares remain accessible to the public.
