At least 10 members of the same family, including women and children, sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out on the second floor of a residential building in the Turag area of the capital early today (6 March).
According to a report by Prothom Alo, the incident took place in the Bamnartek area of Kamarpara in the early hours of the morning. Fire Service and police officials suspect the fire was triggered when gas leaking from a pipeline came into contact with a source of ignition, causing an explosion and subsequent blaze.
The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment. The victims were identified as Roza, 3, Sonia Akter, 24, Rubel, 27, Junaid, 13, Md Enayet Ali, 30, Dulara Khatun, 22, Abu Kalam Rubel, 35, Md Habib, 35, Ayesha Akter, 18, and Riya Akter, 25.
Rafi Al Faruq, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, told Prothom Alo, “Around 4:30am, we received a call from the National Emergency Service 999. The caller reported that a fire had broken out on the second floor of a four-storey building in Bamnartek. The fire started after an explosion caused by gas leaking from a pipeline.”
He said four units of the Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, but upon arrival, they learned that neighbours had already extinguished the fire and rescued the injured victims.
Residential surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Shaon Bin Rahman, confirmed that the victims were brought from Turag and were being treated at the emergency department.
Turag Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Nur Alam Siddique said the fire broke out following an explosion on the second floor of the building.
