Police have arrested a man in Chattogram’s Bayezid Bostami area over the murder of Sarwar Hossain Sakib, who was fatally shot on 5 November 2025 during a BNP outreach campaign.
According to police, a team from Bayezid Bostami Police Station conducted a raid in the West Foridapara area under Chandgaon Police Station on Saturday evening (14 March) and arrested Md Alvin, 31, nephew of top criminal “Boro Sazzad.”
Aminur Rashid, assistant commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (media), told The Business Standard, “An accused in the murder case of Sarwar Hossain Sakib, also known as Babla, has been arrested. He has been produced in court, and operations to arrest the other accused in the case are ongoing.”
Police said Alvin is also accused of involvement in multiple incidents of violence and extorting money from various establishments, including under-construction buildings, in Bayezid Bostami, Chandgaon, and Panchlaish.
He is the nephew of the notorious criminal known as “Boro Sazzad,” they said.
Police sources said that on the evening of 5 November 2025, Ershad Ullah, the BNP’s candidate for Chattogram-8, began a public outreach campaign in the Chalitatoli Khondokarpara Mosque area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station after offering Maghrib prayers, accompanied by local party leaders and activists.
During the programme, assailants opened indiscriminate fire targeting Sarwar Hossain Sakib while leaflets were being distributed.
He was rescued in critical condition and taken to a hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed at Bayezid Bostami Police Station on 7 November, naming several individuals and unidentified suspects, prompting police to launch operations to arrest those involved.
